The Birth of Cyprus’s Bouldering Legacy

The creation of Cyprus’s first bouldering guidebook, a grassroots effort mapping 700+ lines in Akamas. Experiencing the sport for the first time, I saw more than climbing, it was about adventure, community, and a love for this rugged, contested land. Hopefully a vision for a sustainable future.

About Artist

Silvio Augusto Rusmigo

Silvio Augusto Rusmigo is a Cyprus-based photographer whose work explores the intersection of cultural and natural heritage. Over the past 15 years, he has dedicated himself to documenting fragile environments and the delicate balance between human activity and nature, often collaborating with scientists, archaeologists, ecologists, and conservationists. His work is rooted in the idea that photography is not just about capturing beauty—it is about creating awareness, fostering dialogue, and inspiring action. Silvio’s work has been widely exhibited and published internationally. His photography has been showcased in exhibitions across Cyprus, including solo and group shows that highlight his documentary and fine art approach to environmental storytelling. His images have also been displayed in conservation-focused exhibitions that aimed to bring attention to environmental challenges in the Mediterranean region. A major milestone in his career was the creation of Kochinohoma – Red Soil, a multi-year investigative project exploring the illegal killing of migratory birds in Cyprus. This project has taken the form of a photobook-artefact, a documentary film, and an interactive exhibition that allowed viewers to experience the issue firsthand. The exhibition at the A.G. Leventis Gallery (September–October 2022) transformed the space into a figurative crime scene, immersing visitors in the objects, sounds, and landscapes tied to the illegal practice. The project was widely covered in the media and has been featured in international publications, including a story for Audubon Magazine. His most recent book, Aspelia Naturalis, is a celebration of Cyprus’s landscapes, offering an alternative way of seeing the island—one that goes beyond the typical tourist gaze and instead embraces its raw, untamed beauty. The book was created with the support of the Cyprus Environment Foundation and BirdLife Cyprus, and it has been presented through exhibitions and events that bring people closer to the natural heritage of the island. As part of this project, Silvio has also launched The Cyprus Archive, a fine art print collection that builds on 15 years of photographing the island’s landscapes. Beyond conservation and documentary photography, Silvio has also worked in commercial photography, bringing his ethics and visual storytelling approach into collaborations with major brands and institutions. He has photographed campaigns for clients such as Audi, with one of his automotive campaigns receiving multiple awards, including ND Photography Awards, Prix de la Photographie Paris (Px3), and Tokyo International Foto Awards. Despite working in commercial photography, he has always maintained a strong ethical focus, ensuring that his projects align with his values and storytelling approach. Silvio’s passion for photography extends beyond just making images, he believes in using his work to engage the public and create lasting conversations. He has given talks and presentations about conservation photography, artistic process, and ethical storytelling, always emphasizing that a project doesn’t truly exist until it reaches an audience. Whether through exhibitions, books, or discussions, he sees photography as a tool for deeper reflection and public engagement. Silvio is constantly seeking new challenges and perspectives, always driven by curiosity and the desire to explore landscapes that push his understanding of nature and human presence within it. With a strong background in both fine art and documentary photography, he continues to develop work that bridges the personal, the environmental, and the universal.
