Mark Ruckman creates contemporary fine art photography that transforms ordinary natural subjects into abstract works of art. Working primarily with botanicals and ice in a controlled studio environment, he uses macro photography, focus stacking, and carefully shaped light to reveal forms, textures, and patterns that often go unnoticed by the naked eye. After years of creating situational landscape photography, Ruckman shifted to a more intentional studio practice where every element of the image can be thoughtfully controlled. Rather than documenting nature, he collaborates with it, using light, time, temperature, and composition to uncover unexpected visual worlds hidden within familiar materials. His recent botanical work explores the intersection of abstraction and nature, inviting viewers to discover landscapes, sea life, celestial forms, and imagined worlds within flowers, leaves, and seed heads. His earlier Fire & Ice series similarly examined the sculptural qualities of frozen water, revealing the delicate interplay between structure, translucency, and light.
