This portrait is part of a series challenging the notion that dogs are created inferior to mankind. The idea was promulgated by monotheistic religions. But before those, in stories of the Old World, dogs were often viewed as spiritual guides, guardians of the souls or psychopomps.

About Artist

Sophie Gamand

Sophie Gamand is a French, award-winning photographer, artist, and advocate. She is based in Los Angeles. Using both a fine-art and documentary approaches, Sophie's images focus on the human-dog relationship, and what it reveals about our own humanity. Her projects particularly involve at-risk dogs (such as rescues and shelter dogs, dog trapped in the dog meat trade, or street dogs), and highlight their relationship with the people who care for them. Her most known project is Pit Bull Flower Power, a series featuring shelter pit bulls wearing flower crowns, which has been recognized worldwide and has renewed the conversation around these controversial dogs. Sophie is currently working on a long-term project about free-ranging dogs.
